Have you heard of Thomas Alva Edison? The collective answer will be “YES”. Yes, he is the scientist who discovered the light bulb. All of us appreciate his invention. But have you ever thought of the effort that has gone behind it? Most probably the answer would be no.

In the course of this discovery, he had to face many failures. Edison’s opinion regarding this is: “I have not failed 700 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 700 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.”

This story shows us the right way to deal with failure. When you encounter a failure, there is no use lamenting about it. A business reminds us of a coin with two sides, one failure and the other depicting success. These failures contain a collection of lessons which you might not get from anywhere. It highlights the skeptical beliefs which hold us back. Learning from failures is a powerful experience which will be stamped in our subconscious mind forever. And we will never make those mistakes again.

In the marketing business, getting excellent prospects is the crucial make or break factor. If you are not cautious at this step, you are inviting failure even before you start the business. Joining the apt enterprise and choosing members are very significant steps to make the business a success and this process is called "prospecting". How you manage failures and rejections is an important aspect of marketing. Sitting and staring at our failures will not reward you in any sense. Only those who are not ready to accept mediocre results and failures and can put in more effort to accomplish success will be rewarded in marketing.

Here are some ground rules to be followed:

• First of all, set your goals. List your goals by prioritizing them. Read the goals each day, take steps towards achieving it, and have high aspirations pegged around your goal.

• Show commitment in every action taken for accomplishing the goals.

• Do not personalize the failures in the course of action.

• By indulging in self pitying, you are veering away from the targeted goals. So if you want to go somewhere in life, do not spend time in self pitying.

• Utilize all the opportunities before you.

• Invest your time and effort properly.

These are the guidelines in general. As said early, it is the prospecting which decides your success or failure in marketing. You must concentrate both on warm as well as cold markets. Direct your efforts in a productive manner in prospecting to convert failure to success.

• Find the apt person for prospecting.

• By producing an instantaneous retail commission, convert the prospecting procedure to a “source of profit”.

• Use modern technologies for prospecting like internet, blogging etc and save thereby both time and effort.

• Prospecting through internet will generate many competent leads and that too 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

• Build credibility which will help you to win the trust of prospects.

• Build a good personal rapport with the prospect, apart from the business strategy.

• Maintain this rapport.

• Don’t make them feel that you are chasing them.

• Attract them to you through your credibility.

• Research well on your business, well. Be ready with solutions for each doubt that the prospects may ask.

• Plan a follow up in an intelligent manner.

• Make the move according to the plan only.

• Meeting must be conducted only after making an appointment.

• To make the meeting successful, put yourself in the shoe of the prospect.

• Don’t open your conversation directly talking about your business.

• After a meeting, provide them with some product related to your business. If they bring the product in the next meeting, it is an indication that you can devote more time to this prospect.

• If you see that they are not interested don’t waste your time. Move on to the other targeted prospects.

• Don’t give ear to naysayers who always reject our ideas.

• Motivate the prospects on a regular basis.

Utilize your time and effort fruitfully in this manner while prospecting. You will be able to build up large productive down lines under you. This will help you achieve the goals that you have set forth. Do not wallow in your own misery; instead start working in this manner which will make you a success in this business.
